How much are they paying Novell for email services, related servers, and bandwidth fees? I'm sure the $1.5 Mil will look small after you take the future savings of using Google servers, bandwidth, and spam management resources into account.

They are tuning it for speed and efficiency. Firefox 3.6 has faster javascript performance, and the 3.7 trunk has even further tweaks. OS-specific tweaks are also being worked on; there are several tracking bugs for handling OS X performance issues, and handling how different OSes in general handle certain code branches.Though more specific to your points, both of the platform integration features you mentioned are being worked on; both of those mean a lot of special casing that is a lot more difficult than a general system, especially when they want to retain similar usability across multiple platforms with varying feature sets; keychain support, for example, means that their unified backend code needs to be altered to support the keychain api, and also that you could no longer migrate profiles across multiple platforms. This has its own drawbacks for people who don't spend all their time on one machine and like to share one profile. Again, cross-platform is hard, especially when users like being able to not need to care about what OS their browser is running on at any moment.Additionally, new features are useful. Lightweight themes -- personas -- means that changing your browser appearance doesn't need massive amounts of potentially leaky javascript. Weave means that your desktop has the same settings as your laptop, or any other computer you're at for that matter. Both of which will lead to a better user experience for most users.Cross platform is hard. Look how absolutely horrible iTunes is under windows. It ignores pre-existing conventions on UI design and as such, sticks out on windows even worse than Firefox on the Mac. It's also why native UI browser projects exist, like Camino. Firefox places a higher emphasis on things looking decent across multiple platforms, even if it means things are a bit more uglier under the hood on one platform than on others.
